Amartithi — The Immortal Date

Amartithi (Sanskrit: Amar = Immortal; Tithi = Date) is observed every year on 31st January to commemorate the dropping of the physical body by Avatar Meher Baba in 1969.

The Final Hours

Avatar Meher Baba dropped His body at 12:15 PM on 31st January 1969 at His residence at Meherazad, Ahmednagar District, Maharashtra, India. He was 74 years old.

Meher Baba had been in physical suffering for several years due to accidents in 1952 and 1956, but he bore all suffering with equanimity, often saying that it was part of his work for humanity.

Meherabad — The Shrine

Meher Baba’s Samadhi (tomb-shrine) is located at Meherabad, near Ahmednagar. He had himself chosen this location and the tomb was ready during his lifetime.

Every year on 31st January, hundreds of thousands of Baba’s followers from all over the world gather at Meherabad to pay their respects and remember the Avatar. The atmosphere is one of love, music, prayer and silence.

Baba’s Words on His Physical Passing

Meher Baba had declared: “When I drop this body, it will be as if I have gone from one room to another — I am always with you.”

And: “My physical death will mean my physical absence, not my absence from the hearts of those who love me.”
